Neither of my parents grew up in Christian families, they never went to church or had any close family members who were Christians, but my dad became a Christian through a whole bunch of different situations.

How did I come to faith? Well, I guess I’ve been exposed to faith in Jesus my whole life. Before I was born, my parents were missionaries in France, and by the time I came along they had been church leaders. My dad would go on to become the principal of a bible college in Cambridge, England (while my mum became Professor Stephen Hawking’s nurse- but that’s a story for another day!) It’s hard to ignore Jesus stuff with that kind of background. (Fellow preacher’s kids, can I get an ‘amen’?)

I was born in India. It is a country rich in culture and traditions, with people worshipping a million Gods, and speaking hundreds and thousands of languages/dialects; a Socialist Secular Democratic country with only 2% of the population being Christian. It’s a wonderful country with interesting facts but too complicated when it comes to living a balanced life because everything is based on caste, class and cash. Only Jesus can help us adapt to these situations.

My entire family are Christians, and so, whether they were strong in their faith or not, I grew up always surrounded by people who knew Jesus. As a result, from a young age, I’d heard all the famous Bible stories and I’d had lots of Christian input and guidance offered to me in my life. Looking back, I now see that this was an amazing blessing and one that not many people get to have, but as a child it was all I knew, and so it just seemed normal.

Throughout everything that I have experienced during the journey of my life, I’ve never been able to deny God’s existence and that he is the way, the truth and the life. And sometimes, that’s really annoyed me! From a young age I knew Jesus, but never really understood what his love meant for me personally. It wasn’t until one memorable youth camp that things suddenly clicked.
